Tutor Helping Senior Woman In Computer Class

Learning how to use new devices, apps and programs doesn’t have to be difficult. Online tutorials and classes designed for seniors offer lessons on everything from basic computing to social media to advanced word processing skills. Some community senior centers and libraries also offer computer skills classes for adults.

If you or a loved one struggles with computers, checking out some of these classes is a great way to gain new skills and boost tech confidence.

Computers 101: Basic classes for seniors

Staying connected to the wider world is important for the mental, physical and emotional health of older adults. Learning the basics of new technology is a great way to ensure that you or a loved one can stay in touch with friends and family. If you know a senior who struggles with basic computer skills, these online classes can help them gain confidence.

  • The Seniors Guide to Computers website has some of the best tutorials for  seniors who are just getting started with technology or who are trying to learn more about topics like computer security. The Seniors Guide to Computers can also teach you about the basic components of a computer so you can troubleshoot common issues.
  • The Goodwill Community Foundation offers free tutorials on subjects like email and word processing. Be sure to check out the Internet Safety section of the site to learn how to prevent hacking and common Internet scams.
  • Meganga is a video tutorial site that covers both computer basics and the foundations of some Microsoft software programs. This site is best for users who are on computers running Windows. Meganga is ideal for individuals who learn better through video or who have a hard time reading text online. Seniors who are using an Apple computer can find basic information about using a Mac from AnsonAlex.com.

Advanced computing: Going beyond the basics

There are a variety of online resources designed for older adults who want to expand their computer literacy.

  • TechBoomers offers basic computer classes, but it goes far beyond that. Seniors can learn how to shop online, use popular apps such as Netflix and Spotify, join social media sites, find reliable news sources, and even play popular internet-based games.
  • This site has answers for an amazing variety of technology problems. Whether they need to handle tasks like entering appointments in an online calendar or want to save photos and gifs to send in emails, TechBoomers has tutorials that cover it.
  • AARP Skill Builder for Work is designed for seniors who are still working or who want to re-enter the workforce. These courses teach older adults essential skills for the workplace so that they can continue to compete in the workforce and collaborate with younger coworkers. Not all classes are tech-oriented, but they do offer lessons in common business software, digital marketing and more.
  • AARP offers one free course for new users and discounts on other courses through MindEdge Learning, an online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT educators.
  • Another great resource for adults who want to learn basic computer skills is YouTube. Almost any computer skill can be learned by searching the video platform. For example, someone who wants to find a tutorial on using email programs can search “email tutorial for beginners” or “email tutorial for seniors.” There are dozens of free videos for basic computer subjects on YouTube.

Older adults often feel left behind by today’s technology. It shouldn’t be that way. With accessible and straightforward courses, seniors can learn computer skills that will allow them to stay connected, increase their productivity, or simply have fun online.
