The Importance of Hand Washing

Hand washing is, perhaps, the most important hygiene practice. Washing your hands can help prevent the spread of germs that can cause diseases – germs from unwashed hands can get into food or drinks, be transferred to other objects or get into the body by touching your eyes, nose and mouth (sometimes without even realizing it).

In order to experience the benefits of hand washing, you need to wash your hands properly.

  1. Wet your hands with clean water and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them thoroughly with soap.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse your hands well.
  5. Dry your hands with a towel or air dry.

Other Personal Hygiene Tips

Bathe: Similar to hand washing, bathing allows you to wash the dirt and germs off of your body. For older adults, it’s recommended to shower or take a bath at least twice a week.

Brush and Floss Your Teeth: Good oral hygiene results in a healthy smile. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day and maintain regular dental appointments.

Wear Clean Clothes: Dirty clothes can harbor bacteria that can lead to body odor or skin irritations. Wash your clothes with detergent after wearing them.

Get Restful Sleep: Sleeping between seven to nine hours a night helps you maintain overall wellness.

Visit the Doctor: Maintaining regular healthcare appointments can help you make sure you’re on the right track to living a healthy lifestyle. Plus, healthcare providers can catch infections and illnesses early, making it easier to treat them.
