How Much Water Should I Be Drinking?

Did you know that our bodies are composed of about 60% water? And, because of this, it’s important for your overall health to have plenty of fluids each day. Water helps us digest food, absorb nutrients in that food, maintain body temperature and maintain the balance of body fluids.

Although proper water intake is important to total body function, it can sometimes be hard to achieve. This is especially true as we get older. So, the question that remains – how much water should I be drinking?

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Your individual water needs depend on many factors, such as age, gender, weight, how active you are and where you live. Generally speaking, though, The Mayo Clinic found that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 3.7 liters of fluids for men and about 2.7 liters of fluids a day for women. Dehydration means the body doesn’t have as much fluid within the cells and blood vessels as it should. You lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements, and not replenishing this fluid can lead to dehydration. Unfortunately, dehydration is an overlooked health risk especially as we age since the body’s natural mechanisms to protect us from dehydration work less, such as reduced thirst signals.

  • Don’t wait until you “feel thirsty” – be sure to drink water and other fluids regularly throughout the day.
  • Buy a water bottle with marks that help you stay on track for your daily water intake.

  • Only have drinks with added sugars, like soda and some juices, in moderation.
  • Address any continence issues that may deter you from drinking enough water.
