An estimated 50 million people worldwide have dementia, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year. Dementia is a syndrome where there is deterioration in memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities.

It’s a common misconception that cognitive decline is a natural part of aging. However, there are many lifestyle choices you can make that can increase your cognitive function now and help you prevent the onset of dementia in the future. Keep reading to learn about a few natural ways to help you prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Tips to Help You Naturally Prevent Dementia

Exercise Your Mind – Regularly challenging yourself mentally is one of the most effective ways to help reduce the risk of dementia. Much like your physical body, exercising your mind allows your cognitive abilities to get stronger and leads to a healthy, active brain. Find something that challenges your brain that you enjoy doing, like reading, playing cards or board games and solving puzzles.

Exercise Your Body – Physical exercise improves your heart health, weight and overall wellbeing, which all help contribute to a stronger mind. Finding an exercise routine that works for you is important, but it is ideal to find one that incorporates at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week and builds in resistance activities twice a week.

Be Mindful of What You Consume – When it comes to what you choose to put into your body, your overall wellness greatly improves with a balanced diet. Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy. Along with healthy eating, also remember to limit your alcohol consumption and quit smoking if you haven’t already done so.

Reduce Stress – Studies have linked anxiety and stress to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, especially for those already at risk. Practicing meditation, spending time with family and friends and participating in relaxing activities helps to reduce the feelings of stress.

Start the Conversation with Your Healthcare Provider – With any healthcare concern, begin the discussion with your doctor. They will have the background knowledge and expertise needed to help guide you to a healthier lifestyle.
