Maintaining nutritious diet choices results in a healthy body and overall wellbeing. Making these choices, however, isn’t always easy. That’s why The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics names March as National Nutrition Month, so people like you can learn more about informed food choices and simple steps to developing sound eating habits.

Every year there is a new theme to promote healthy food choices. The theme for 2020 is “Eat Right, Bite by Bite.” This theme highlights how small changes to our diet and food choices influence our routine and can lead to positive cumulative effects over time.

Along with a theme, there is a goal each week that shows ways we can start making healthier choices. Keep reading to learn more about the weekly tips from the 2020 National Nutrition Month.

Simple Healthy Eating Tips to Adopt During National Nutrition Month

Eat a Variety of Nutritious Foods Each Day: This tip takes us back to learning about the food pyramid and major food groups in school. Eating a wide variety of healthy foods is essential to your body’s function and also helps prevent chronic disease. Eat your share of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy every day.

Plan Your Meals Each Week: Ideas tend to “stick” better when they’re written down. Planning your meals each week allows you to carefully consider the food you will be eating and the nutritional value you’re receiving. By planning nutritious meals in advance, you know exactly what to add to your list with healthful recipes and foods in mind.

Learn Skills to Create Tasty Meals: You don’t need to be an expert chef to learn a few key techniques that help you craft tasty meals. Learn how to cook through online research, recipe books or even taking a cooking class. You’re giving yourself the power to include healthful ingredients and understand exactly what is going into every dish you make by preparing your own meals.

Consult a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN): RDNs are licensed medical professionals offering personalized nutrition advice that suits your lifestyle and needs. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral to an RDN to learn more about the transformative power of food and a plan that suits your needs.
