6 Fall Activities for Seniors in Whiting, NJ

A senior couple picks pumpkins.

Autumn is the time for pumpkin spice lattes and apple picking, but that’s just the beginning of the fall activities seniors can experience in and around Whiting, New Jersey. From turkey farms to winery outings, there’s something fun to do whether you’re on your own, with friends, or on the go with family and grandkids.

1. Sip Away the Afternoon

Wineries were made for fall. It’s harvest time, after all, and there’s no better way to join in than by sipping on a nice chardonnay or pinot noir at the vineyard where the grapes were grown. Luckily, there are many great options in the area, including Laurita Winery, which is known for its food truck festivals, and Cream Ridge Winery, which prides itself on interesting creations like Jersey Berry, a mix of New Jersey cranberries and Chardonnay.

2. Head to the Farm

Fall activities for seniors and their grandkids don’t get any better than Argos Farm’s Fall Festival (Sept. 14 – Nov. 3). You can find your way through the corn maze, pick pumpkins, listen to live music, and enjoy the hayride. After the fun, indulge in the festival’s food options, ranging from pasture-raised beef burgers to fresh donuts. The festival runs from Thursdays through Sundays. Buy your tickets beforehand online to take advantage of discounted senior rates.

3. Enjoy a Harvest Tea

The Mathis House Tea Room is open all year, but fall brings something extra special — the Harvest Victorian Tea offers a five-course meal of homemade soup, seasonal salad, warm scone with clotted cream, a variety of tea sandwiches, and a plate of desserts with a pot of tea ($40 for seniors). Feel free to take a tour of the inn when you’re done with tea, and on the weekends, enjoy the live music.

4. Dive Into the Past

Fall activity ideas for seniors aren’t limited to pumpkins and spiced drinks. Bass River State Forest is bathed in autumn glory this time of year and, right in the center of it, you’ll find one of the most historic sites in the country. Cedar Bridge Tavern is the site of the last documented land engagement of the American Revolution. Today, the tavern is a museum open to the public Monday through Friday. The tavern dates back to 1816 and boasts the oldest standing bar in New Jersey. Take some time to learn about life in the 19th century, then take the 3.5-mile walking trail through the site’s 291 acres.

5. Indulge in Pumpkin Spice

Fall has officially become the season of pumpkin spice — and one of the best places to get in on the action is Café A’ Roma where the pumpkin spice latte comes topped with whipped cream, caramel sauce drizzle, and a mini donut. Not your thing? Their gelato is imported from Italy and can be taken home in 32-ounce containers to be shared.

6. Take Time for Turkeys

If there’s one thing you don’t want to be this time of year, it’s a turkey. Still, Lee Turkey Farm is worth the 27-mile drive from Whiting. The farm has been buying — and selling — quality, oven-ready turkeys for 80 years. Pick your produce or head to the farm stand to buy whatever’s in season. The farm’s annual Fall Harvest Days are held in early October and feature hay rides, a corn maze, and special pricing on fruits and veggies.
